UNITY AND DIVERSITY IN ONE BODY
1 Corinthians 12:12 NKJV
“For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.”
The apostle Paul compares our bodies to the body of Christ. Each of us being a part which has a specific function that is necessary to the entire body of Christ. We are all different for a purpose, and within our differences we must work together. As Christians we must avoid two very common errors;
1. Being proud of our abilities
2. Thinking we have nothing to give to the body of believers
Instead of comparing ourselves to one another, why not unite and use our different God given gifts to spread the Good News of salvation.
As the body of Christ and being the church we are composed of many types of people from a variety of backgrounds with a multitude of gifts and abilities. These differences can easily divide us, as was the case in Corinth. Beside all of our differences, as believers we all have one thing in common – faith in Christ. It is on this essential truth that the church finds unity. We are all baptized by one Holy Spirit into one body of believers, the church. When we are baptized we don’t lose our individuality we become one with Christ.
When we become a Christian, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in us, and we are born into God’s family. “…We have all received the same Spirit” (1Cor 12:13b NKJV) means that each of us has received the same Holy Spirit. As members of God’s family, we may have different interests and gifts, but we are united by the Spirit into one spiritual body.
