“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong.”
Throughout times there have been many false teachings denying the reality of sin. John tells us that if we continue sinning we cannot claim to belong to God. Those that claim that they are not in sin or accusing others of being in sin are only fooling themselves and refusing to accept the truth that He came to forgive us and cleanse us from every wrong.
True confession involves a commitment to not continue sinning. If we are planning on committing the same sins over again we are not genuinely confessing our sins to God, all we are looking for is temporary forgiveness. As we confess our sins in faithful prayer we should also pray for strength to defeat temptation the next time we face it.
In admitting our sins and receiving Christ’s cleansing we are agreeing with God that our sin truly is sin and that we are willing to turn from it, we are ensuring that we do not conceal our sins from Him and consequently from ourselves, and we recognize our tendency to sin and rely on His power to overcome sin.
Jesus Christ’s sacrifice transforms our lives and hearts and makes us clean on the inside. His sacrifice is infinitely effective. No barrier of sin or weakness on our part can stifle His forgiveness, thanks be to Him, and all of the glory.
