"let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us” (Hebrews 12:1 NLT)
In supermarkets and airports there are carts or trucks to load the weight carrying food for the home, or the heavy bags that we carry for a trip.
The goal is to simply make our load light. However, there are loads that we must “throw away” or get rid of and these are the loads that may be in the mind or consciousness.
This is the heavy burden which consists of all that prevents us from properly develop our Christian life. This load is presented in different ways, which very often can lead us to the following:
- Low self-esteem.
- Defeatist attitude.
- Feeling of rejection.
- Perfectionism.
- Fear of failure.
- Neglect.
- Lack of self-control.
- Lack of concentration.
- Negative attitude.
- Mistrust.
- Indecision.
That heaviest load must deal is "the weight of us besetting sin". A weakness is not sin in general, but is of "sin", in particular with specific characteristics, constantly personally harassing us. Examples are: lies, coveting what we don't have, get false testimony or propensity to talk badly of your neighbor, as well among other sins or weaknesses that we miss, because we say or tell ourselves: "that happens to everyone".
What should we do?
Hebrews 12.2 NLT: " We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith"
Hebrews 12:1 NLT “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us”
What should we do?
- Admit we have onerous burdens in our lives and ask the Lord to help us to rid ourselves of them.
- Try to get rid of sins that constantly cause us to stumble.
- Honestly accept our personal responsibility for all that burden.
- Decide to confront it, knowingly submitting to the Biblical precept that encourages us saying: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." (Hebrews 12.1 NLT).
